A beautiful rural Norfolk village full of history - the only complete survival of a Norman planned settlement. It is an English Heritage site. I walked around the village and explored its historical landmarks:
The surviving Bailey Gate is a brilliant tourist attraction, driving through the old castle gates is an wonderful experience.
The castle was founded after the Battle of Hastings and is a Motte-and-Bailey castle. There are lots of ruins for you to explore as well as historical information throughout, and brilliant countryside views.
The priory dates back to 1090, and is the best preserved monastic site in England. If you want to explore further and get up close and personal with the architecture you have to pay to enter - and is currently closed at the moment. However, there is a perfectly good walk around the priory which I took.
Overall a perfect day out, with a great mixture of history and nature.
There is a 6 mile walk around the area which I intend to go back and do!
